So I finally ran out of money, but my next loan came through for $25k. Sheesh. I'm being bent over a table on the interest too. Thanks SS for screwing us out of keybank. I thought they had high interest.
I took a weekday off work and flew almost 3 hours solo in the pattern at the airport. The school has a requirement for that, and I had to get it out of the damn way because the wind and weather has been conspiring against me.
My next training is going to be a VOR flight, and I'm getting a new instructor. My current instructor has to go back to Norway in a few weeks anyway, and he's bummed because this is a great time for new pilots. Everyone is looking for heli pilots, it seems.
I'm having a hard time learning flight planning, getting the weather sources together, finding way points on the sectional charts, calculating pressure altitude, wind correction angle, and ground speed. I'll be glad when I can trade in that mechanical computer for a digital one. Pro pilots such as off shore oil platform shuttlers have a ground support crew that does all the weight and balance, fuel calcs, etc for the pilots. What a luxury.

Re: More Plodding, trudging, grueling
Mon, March 20, 2006 - 8:16 PMHey mark,
Congrats on your achievements, it's really cool to read your posts, I'm about to start ground school up here in Oregon and it's neat to hear about what's to come (I hope). Keep posting and if you ever fly up to PDX let me know I'll buy you a drink. Got any advice to help me get a jump on things?

Trust me, don't by a digital flight computer. When you stop training and you stop teaching people about it, you'll stop using it. The last practical application I ever had for it was my last written test. Most written test computers have an e6b or the electronic equiviant built into their program to use for the test. I only pick it up so I can confuse other students. Weight and balance is something practical you'll need to know, but most pilots know their aircraft and they'll know if their over weight. Tour companies calculate weight and balance because you got a bunch of fat tourist comming and going all the time. You'll do a bunch of examples in your aircraft (and your a pretty skinny guy, unlike me) and I doubt you'll ever excced your CG, unless you got a real big student or photographer. At that point it will take you less than 5 minuites to figure it out. Learning is hard, doing it is easy.
One more thing, don't forget to stop your bitching. Your flying!!!! Yeah, weather can suck but you've already accomplished something most people are still dreaming about. This IS the fun part.

Re: More Plodding, trudging, grueling
Sun, March 26, 2006 - 4:41 PMI wished they needed more pilots 25 to35 years ago!!!
I got my CFI-H 01/02/1971. The Examiner started with a downwind take off, to crosswind full touchdown autorotation, followed by a hovering autorotation (after lesson plan, etc. on ground). After that the rest of the checkride was a piece of cake. It really was easy compared to the 50 hoist missions, 35 hot, I did in RVN. I anyone wants, I can describe my "circular takeoff" out of a tight hot LZ invention!!! Anyone able to play tic-tac-toe with the skids? How about writing your name? Then you're good, heh, heh. -
