Hey Folks,
I just wanted to share some good news with you all. Elvis is goin' to Las Vegas. I got a job flying tours of the Grand Canyon. I start training at the end of this month in Vegas but I'll actually be working out of the South Rim near Flagstaff AZ. It's a good company, good equiptment, maintainence and saftey record. You can check them out at www.maverickhelicopter.com. The work schedule is 8 days on and 6 days off. A week vacation every other week could be nice. No way in hell am I relocating completely and giving up my place in Venice. The pay is good and supposibly so are the tips. They also give you an IPod and let you pick your own music. Sweet. Hope those tourist like Crystal Method cause that's my favorite music to fly to. I may continue to teach on my days off but we'll see. The helicopters Maverick flys are almost brand new. EC 130's. here's a pic www.aerospace-technology.com/pro....jpg
Going to be quite a change from the R22, but I think I'll adjust to comfy seats, glass panels and A/C. Building the turbine time will also be a plus. I'd like to eventually work full time here in LA and it seems I'll need about 500hrs of turbine for that to happen.
I'll let you all know how it goes.
I also hope I can get off for Burningman.

Awesome, Dude! I am looking forward when I have my magic number of hours and can get a real job. It seems so far away right now, but I'm plodding through.

I knew a guy from HAI that did those tours in vegas and he made more in tips than salary. Rock on.

      Thanks All,
I'm starting to get pretty jazzed about it. Alot of things to sort out, esspecially how I'm going to get back and forth from Venice to Flagstaff. As Justin may attest, there is no fucking way I'm giving up my place in Venice! Gonna couch surf the first week then gotta find my own digs. Rent looks pretty cheap. Not sure how I'm gonna get aroung once I'm there. That town can't be that big. I start training in Las Vegas this Monday. I kinda wish I could work out of LV. Although after losing $500 at the roulete table the night after my interview, perhaps Flagstaff will keep me out of trouble.
I will say this about the job market for helicopter pilots. When people and schools tell you there is a demand, they are right! In an interview, your usually trying to sell your self to the company. The guy I talked to was so nice and so polite, I felt like he was trying to sell this job to me. By the time we landed and before we even got out of the helicopter, he offered me the job. When he called my references, he offered jobs to them. All the other companies I droped off resumes to all called or emailed wanting to meet. This week I had to call some of the companies I applied to that didn't hire me cause I didn't have enough turbine time about a charter. When I told them where I was going, the told me to call them wheh I hit a certain number. This all bodes well for the future of this profession, at least for the next few years.
Good luck to the rest of you, you'll get there before you know it!

I grew up in Flagstaff and my family lives there! That would be so wild flying out of Flagstaff of all places. It gets pretty cold in the winter (easily minus 28 F around christmas) but during the spring and summer it is really nice. At least the low temperatures kind of make up for the high altitude.

Flagstaff should keep you out of trouble for the most part.

I passed my CATS written and I'm just preparing for my checkride. Lots of material to know for that, in addition to the flying proficiency. Thanks again for the study aid that you sent me -- really helped a lot.
